Guernsey - A better way of life

Health

Guernsey has an excellent health service, with modern facilities and highly qualified and experienced staff.

The healthcare system for the Bailiwick of Guernsey is separate from the National Health Service in the UK.

Residents and visitors both have to pay directly for primary care (e.g. A&E, GP and Ambulance), but only visitors have to pay directly for secondary care (e.g. hospital in-patient treatment).

Secondary care for residents is funded through contributions to both general taxation and social insurance which covers the costs of the Island’s Health & Social Services Department, and pays for a contract with a private practice of consultants to provide surgical and consultancy services.

Patients do have the option of private medical treatment, either self-funded or via one of a number of private medical insurance schemes operated in the island.
